From December to April when the sea is calmer, the pristine waters along the Kalpitiya peninsula are ideal for snorkeling.
Close to Udekki, just half an hour by boat, is a small reef off the coast of the fishing village of Thalawila where the culturally significant St Anne’s church lies. Ideal for families, this reef, in shallow waters, is teeming with colourful tropical fish darting in and around the coral.
For those feeling slightly more adventurous, about two hours north by boat is the well-known Bar Reef at the top of the peninsula. A large but relatively shallow reef means the rich sea life can easily be seen and enjoyed.
Whilst Bar Reef is quite shallow there are some areas more suited to scuba diving. Qualified divers can explore the calm of this underwater world, discovering sea creatures, big and small. PADI training is also available in the area.
